How Much Adaptive Equipment Do You Really Need?
There is no magic number. Start with the least complicated option that meaningfully supports participation.

There is not a magic number. Adaptive equipment can make daily life easier for the person using it and for the people supporting them. It can also create costs, clutter, and a whole lot of “Where are we supposed to put this?”
A useful starting point
My general rule is to look for the least amount of equipment needed to support meaningful participation and independence in daily life. “Least” does not mean avoiding specialized equipment. It means the solution should earn the space, cost, setup, and effort it asks from the person and family.
If going on an outing requires several extra bags, complicated assembly, and perfect timing, a good-looking solution may not become a used solution. That is not a caregiver failure. Life is busy, and every tool has to fit within the entire routine.
Look at more than the object
Before buying, consider the task, the environment, how often the item will be used, who will set it up, whether it travels, how it is cleaned, and how the child feels about using it. A highly specialized device may be exactly right. In another situation, changing the position, stabilizing an object, or using a common household item may be enough.
Five questions before you buy
- What specific part of the activity is difficult?
- Will this help the child participate rather than simply make the task faster for an adult?
- Can the item work in more than one setting or activity?
- Can the child and caregiver use it consistently?
- Is there a simpler adaptation worth trying first?
Occupational therapists consider how the person, activity, and environment interact. Research on pediatric occupational therapy also emphasizes participation in everyday occupations, while acknowledging that evidence varies across interventions and populations.
The best solution often comes from collaboration among the child, caregivers, educators, and relevant professionals. Each sees a different piece of the problem.
Try before you commit when possible
A short trial can answer questions that a product page cannot. Can the child get into position comfortably? Can the family set it up on an ordinary morning? Does it work in the places where the activity actually happens? Borrowing, renting, using a demonstration unit, or testing a low-cost version may be possible depending on the equipment and local resources.
Write down the specific change you hope to see before the trial. “Better” is difficult to evaluate. “Can reach the art materials while seated with the class” or “can help bring the cup to the table” gives everyone something concrete to observe.
Revisit the fit
Children grow, routines change, and an item that once helped may become unnecessary or inappropriate. Check comfort, condition, size, and actual use over time. Do not modify medical or safety-critical equipment outside the manufacturer’s instructions or without guidance from the qualified professional responsible for it.
What if the equipment is not being used?
Start with curiosity rather than blame. The barrier may be setup time, discomfort, appearance, storage, training, or the fact that the tool solves a problem no one in the daily routine considers most important. Nonuse is useful information. It can guide a better conversation about the goal and the environment.
